Overview Of Driveway Flooding Solutions

Overview Of Driveway Flooding Solutions – Flooding is not an entertaining affair – either for those affected or for the helpers. If floods were not enough to endanger life and limb, floods caused massive damage to the property every year. But can you protect yourself? The answer is yes! There are various systems that promise to block floods in the event of a fall. In this article, we give an overview of the different flood protection systems and their application area.

Sandsacks

Sandsacks have always been one of the most useful tools in the fight against floods and flooding. In addition to the traditional jute bag, there are also sands bags made of plastic (polypropylene PP or polyacrylic PAC). The latter are much slimmer than their relatives of natural fiber but are much better suited for long-term storage. For example, they can be kept UV-protected even when filled.

For filling, it should be said that sands bags are only filled to 2/3, as only they remain form-flexible. Sands bags usually have a size of 30 x 60 cm and weigh between 12 and 15 kg when filled. Its field of application ranges from dike defense to the protection of buildings. This allows water to be diverted, but also entrance areas and garages are sealed.

Water Filled Systems

If floods threaten the flood, it is often necessary to prepare for the preparation in case of severe storms and rain with local floods. For the time to procure sand and to fill sacks is not given in these cases. But there is also a solution for this: because water can be combated with water, as is the case with firefighting.

Thus, water-filled flood protection systems make use of the water’s weight to form active water barriers. The systems are either pre-filled with water or fill up automatically when flooding. The construction, particularly in the municipal area and over long distances, is possible with these systems quickly and easily. Floodstop, Beaver and the Flood tubes protection system are methods that are successfully used in these areas.

However, floodwater protection systems filled with water are also available for small-scale floodings, such as the closure of fire-fighting water and private use. Thus, water protection pads fulfill the same functions as a sadsack, but they can also carry out further tasks. In contact with water, the cushions swell up without releasing the water. The weight creates a seal downwards. But also the disposal of run-off water after a pipe break is thus a children’s play. Due to the easy storage, constant availability and ease of use, water protection cushions are superior to all other systems, especially in case of rain and short-term flooding as well as pipe breakages.

Note: We even tested the water protection pads ourselves. The article Mobile flood protection for the house shows how pure water protection cushions can be used and what they do.

Dams

In regions affected by flooding, the above-mentioned mobile flood protection systems can only be used to a limited extent. Because regular floods and floods are to be feared, it is probably more sensible to look for a permanent, specially constructional solution.

Dammbalks are therefore one of the most obvious solutions. These monorails are installed either in concrete foundations or bolted to existing walls. In the private sector, the dam bales are usually inserted in rails attached to the building and thus secure doors and gates very effectively against floods. The sealing is carried out on the sides and downwards using a lamella or sole seals. The dam bales are mostly made of aluminum and are therefore easy to assemble.

Although the investment is not very favorable, the home can be protected very quickly and efficiently against an imminent flood. The clearing-up work is also limited to the removal of the dambalks. The disposal of used sandbags is dispensed. A visible structural change must, however, be accepted in most cases.

Plate Systems

Similar to dammbalks, plate systems can be used effectively against high water. In this case, the locking is not achieved by pushing into struts, but either by mechanical locking or by magnets. As with the Dammbalken, the plate systems do not come without structural measures.

The key to locking with magnets is that the waterproof plates are not held by rails, but merely by magnets in place. Through this principle, movable doors can also be realized. There are no limits to the imagination. With panel systems, all problem areas such as windows, doors, garden gates, garage entrances and tank rooms can be protected against flooding.

But also this flood protection system is connected with an investment for the purchase and the installation. However, this system is incredibly fast to use. This is why building up, and clearing work is usually even simpler than in damage systems.

Flood Protection Windows And Doors

If the risk of flooding is already known before construction or renovation, it is worth buying so-called flood protection windows and doors. Because these not only make all external shots and window frames obsolete but are permanently watertight. The density ranges from 80 cm to 2 m over Sims. This is, of course, noticeable in the price. Nevertheless, it is probably the most convenient solution. Still, the best thing is not to let the water go as far as it could get into the house.

As an alternative to the flood windows, there are so-called window projections. These are usually 20 mm thick acrylic glass panels which are attached to the window using silicone. Particularly in cellar windows in shafts, this can be a satisfactory solution, which protects the basement in case of flooding. With inhabited cellars is admittedly not so beautiful sight. But this is still better than a flooded basement!
